What Is Axert?
Axert (almotriptan) is a prescription medication used to manage acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It works by selectively binding to serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, causing cranial vasoconstriction and inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, most patients experience meaningful pain relief within two hours of taking a dose.

Frequently asked questions
Axert (almotriptan) is used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It is taken at the start of a migraine headache to relieve pain and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. It is not intended for migraine prevention.
Axert works by selectively activating serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors in the brain. This causes the blood vessels around the brain to narrow and blocks the release of substances that trigger pain and inflammation, helping to stop a migraine attack.
Axert is taken orally as a single 6.25 mg or 12.5 mg tablet at the onset of a migraine. If the migraine returns after an initial response, a second dose may be taken at least two hours after the first. No more than two doses should be taken within any 24-hour period. Your physician will confirm the appropriate dose for you.
Axert is not appropriate for people with certain heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, a history of stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, or severe liver or kidney impairment. It should also be avoided within 24 hours of taking another triptan or an ergotamine-containing medication. Your doctor will review your full medical history before prescribing.
Common side effects of Axert include nausea, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, and somnolence. Serious but rare side effects can include chest tightness or pressure, changes in heart rhythm, and serotonin syndrome, especially if combined with other serotonergic medications. Contact a healthcare provider promptly if you experience chest pain or neurological symptoms after taking Axert.
Many patients take both a daily preventive migraine treatment and a short-term acute treatment like Axert. However, certain combinations require caution. Your Doctronic physician will review all of your current medications, including preventive therapies, antidepressants, and any other triptans, to confirm that Axert is safe for you.
Doctronic uses AI-assisted evaluation to gather your symptoms and medical history, which is then reviewed by a licensed physician. If treatment is appropriate, the physician creates a personalized treatment plan, which may include a prescription. The entire process is HIPAA-compliant and can be completed from your phone or computer.
