What Is Steglatro?

Steglatro (ertugliflozin) is a prescription medication used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, causing excess glucose to be excreted in the urine rather than reabsorbed into the bloodstream. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, Steglatro can help patients reach and maintain their glycemic goals as part of a broader diabetes management plan.

Is Online Steglatro Treatment Right for You?

Steglatro may be appropriate for adults with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled through diet, exercise, or other medications alone. A clinician will review your current medications, kidney function, and overall health to confirm it is a safe fit for you.

Because Steglatro directly affects kidney glucose handling, patients with a history of chronic kidney disease, recurrent urinary tract infections, diabetic ketoacidosis, or genital yeast infections may need additional evaluation before starting treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Steglatro (ertugliflozin) is an SGLT2 inhibitor that works by blocking the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 protein in the kidneys. This prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the blood, so excess sugar is expelled in the urine, lowering overall blood glucose levels.

Steglatro is approved for adults aged 18 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severely reduced kidney function (eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73m2) should not use Steglatro, so kidney function is assessed before prescribing.

Steglatro is available in 5 mg and 15 mg tablets taken once daily in the morning, with or without food. Prescribers typically start patients at 5 mg and may increase to 15 mg if additional blood sugar control is needed and the medication is well tolerated.

The most commonly reported side effects include genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and increased urination. More serious but less common risks include diabetic ketoacidosis, low blood pressure, and a rare skin infection called Fournier gangrene. Your physician will review your individual risk profile.

On its own, Steglatro has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). However, the risk increases if Steglatro is combined with insulin or sulfonylurea medications. Your treatment plan will note this risk and provide guidance on monitoring.

Clinical trials have shown that Steglatro reduces body weight and blood pressure as secondary effects. While Jardiance and Farxiga have large-scale trials supporting cardiovascular and kidney outcomes, comparable large outcome trial data for ertugliflozin specifically is more limited. Discuss these factors with your physician when choosing the right medication.

Steglatro can be used alone or in combination with other common diabetes medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, and insulin. Your Doctronic physician will review your full medication list to check for interactions and determine the safest combination for your treatment plan.

Doctronic connects you with licensed physicians who are board-certified and in active practice. Every treatment plan is doctor-reviewed, and the platform is fully HIPAA-compliant. Our clinical processes are regularly audited to ensure patient safety and quality of care.
