What Is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism is a thyroid condition marked by excessive production of thyroid hormones, leading to symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, heat intolerance, unintended weight loss, tremor, and anxiety. It can disrupt nearly every organ system in the body and, if left untreated, may lead to serious cardiovascular complications. With the right treatment and support, most people with hyperthyroidism can achieve stable thyroid hormone levels and a significant improvement in quality of life.

  • Caused by conditions such as Graves' disease, toxic nodular goiter, or thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism results from overactive thyroid tissue producing excess T3 and T4 hormones.

Is Online Hyperthyroidism Treatment Right for You?

Doctronic evaluates patients who have been diagnosed with or are experiencing symptoms consistent with hyperthyroidism, including palpitations, unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, or tremor. Our licensed physicians can assess your thyroid history, current labs, and symptoms to determine the most appropriate medical therapy.

Because hyperthyroidism involves the endocrine system and can affect the heart, liver, and other organs, our physicians review your full medical and cardiovascular history to ensure safe and effective prescribing. Patients with significant cardiac involvement or thyroid storm should seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Common symptoms include a rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations), unexplained weight loss despite normal or increased appetite, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, tremor of the hands, anxiety or irritability, fatigue, and frequent bowel movements. Some people also notice an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) or eye changes if Graves' disease is the underlying cause.

The primary diagnostic test is a serum TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) level, which is suppressed in hyperthyroidism. Free T4 and free T3 levels are also measured and are typically elevated. Additional tests such as thyroid antibodies (TSI or TRAb for Graves' disease) or a radioactive iodine uptake scan may be ordered to determine the underlying cause.

Both medications are antithyroid drugs that reduce thyroid hormone production. Methimazole is generally preferred because it can be taken once daily and has a lower risk of serious side effects. PTU is preferred in certain situations, such as during the first trimester of pregnancy or in thyroid storm, because it also blocks the conversion of T4 to the more active T3 hormone. Your physician will choose the right medication based on your specific circumstances.

Most patients are treated with antithyroid medication for 12 to 18 months. After this period, a trial of discontinuation may be considered if thyroid hormone levels have normalized and antibody levels have declined. However, some patients have a relapse and require longer treatment, repeat therapy, or a definitive treatment such as radioactive iodine ablation or thyroid surgery.

Antithyroid medications take weeks to lower thyroid hormone levels, but symptoms like rapid heartbeat, palpitations, tremor, and anxiety can be debilitating in the meantime. Propranolol blocks the effects of excess thyroid hormones on the heart and nervous system, providing rapid symptom relief while the antithyroid drug works. It is not a treatment for the underlying thyroid overactivity itself.

A rare but serious side effect of both methimazole and PTU is agranulocytosis, a sudden drop in white blood cells that increases infection risk. Patients should contact a physician immediately if they develop fever, sore throat, or mouth sores while on these medications. PTU carries an additional rare risk of liver toxicity. Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function may be recommended by your physician.

Doctronic uses an AI-powered evaluation to gather detailed information about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. That information is then reviewed by a licensed physician who determines whether a prescription treatment is appropriate for you. If it is, the physician creates a personalized treatment plan. The entire process is designed to be fast, thorough, and convenient.
