What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like?

Andre Stone | MD

Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.

A panic attack feels like intense, overwhelming fear with physical symptoms that peak within minutes. Your heart may race or pound, and you may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, and sweating. Many people describe feeling like they're having a heart attack or dying. Trembling, nausea, dizziness, and hot or cold flashes are common. You might feel detached from reality or fear losing control. These episodes typically last 5-20 minutes but can feel much longer. The physical sensations can be so intense that many people seek emergency care. Because chest pain, breathing difficulty, dizziness, and a racing heart can also have other causes, seek urgent medical help for new, severe, or concerning symptoms rather than assuming they are caused by panic.
