Does Effexor Cause More Weight Gain than Lexapro?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
Effexor typically causes less weight gain than Lexapro in most patients. Clinical studies show that venlafaxine (Effexor) is associated with modest weight loss or weight neutrality, with average changes of 1-3 pounds over 6 months. In contrast, escitalopram (Lexapro) commonly causes weight gain of 2-10 pounds, particularly with long-term use exceeding 6 months. Effexor's dual action on serotonin and norepinephrine may actually suppress appetite in some patients, while Lexapro's selective serotonin effects tend to increase cravings for carbohydrates. Individual responses vary significantly based on factors like dosage, duration of treatment, and personal metabolism.
