Can You Switch from Lexapro to Zoloft Without Tapering?

Switching from Lexapro to Zoloft is usually done by stopping Lexapro one day and starting Zoloft the next day. Some doctors will taper off Lexapro while gradually introducing Zoloft. Less commonly the physician will have the patient taper off Lexapro completely, wait for an interval, then start Zoloft. Both medications are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that affect serotonin levels, without dangerous discontinuation interactions. Lexapro has a long half-life, which helps smooth the transition. The method for switching may be determined by your current Lexapro dose, how long you've been taking it, your history with side effects, previous withdrawal symptoms, and your individual response to medication changes. The goals are to avoid withdrawal, avoid serotonin excess, and maintain symptom control.
