What Is Zegerid?
Zegerid (omeprazole-sodium bicarbonate) is a prescription medication used to manage acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It works by combining omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that blocks acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining, with sodium bicarbonate, which neutralizes existing acid immediately and protects omeprazole from breaking down before it is absorbed. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, most patients experience significant reduction in heartburn, regurgitation, and related symptoms.

Is Online Zegerid Treatment Right for You?
Zegerid is prescribed for adults with acid reflux, GERD, erosive esophagitis, or related conditions requiring reliable acid suppression. It may also be used for short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers or as part of a regimen to reduce the risk of upper GI bleeding in critically ill patients at the appropriate care level.
Because Zegerid contains sodium bicarbonate, your physician will review your cardiovascular and kidney history, any sodium-restricted diet requirements, and any medications you currently take that may interact with proton pump inhibitors, including antifungals, anticoagulants, and antiretrovirals.

Frequently asked questions
Zegerid contains omeprazole combined with sodium bicarbonate. The sodium bicarbonate neutralizes stomach acid immediately and raises gastric pH, which protects the omeprazole from degradation so it is absorbed more quickly. Standard omeprazole formulations use an enteric coating instead, resulting in slower onset of action.
Because sodium bicarbonate raises gastric pH rapidly, omeprazole in Zegerid reaches peak plasma concentration faster than enteric-coated formulations. Most patients notice improvement in heartburn symptoms within one to four days of starting therapy, though full healing of esophageal erosions may take four to eight weeks.
Zegerid should be taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal. Capsules should be swallowed whole. If using the powder packet, mix the entire contents with about two tablespoons of water, stir well, and drink immediately. Do not mix with other liquids or foods.
Zegerid is not recommended for patients who are allergic to omeprazole or any other proton pump inhibitor, or to sodium bicarbonate. It should be used with caution in patients on a sodium-restricted diet due to heart failure, kidney disease, or hypertension, as each dose contains a significant amount of sodium. Your physician will review your full history before prescribing.
Yes. Omeprazole can reduce the effectiveness of medications that require an acidic environment for absorption, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and certain antiretrovirals. It may also increase levels of warfarin and methotrexate. The sodium bicarbonate component can affect absorption timing of other oral medications. Always share your complete medication list with your physician.
Long-term PPI use has been associated with reduced magnesium levels, decreased vitamin B12 absorption, a modest increase in risk of bone fractures, and a small risk of Clostridioides difficile infection. Your physician will evaluate whether ongoing therapy is appropriate and may recommend periodic monitoring of magnesium and vitamin levels.
