What Is Symbicort?
Symbicort (budesonide + formoterol) is a prescription medication used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by combining an inhaled corticosteroid (budesonide), which reduces airway inflammation, with a long-acting beta-2 agonist (formoterol), which relaxes the muscles around the airways to keep them open. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, most patients experience fewer flare-ups, better daily breathing, and improved quality of life.

Is Online Symbicort Treatment Right for You?
Symbicort may be appropriate for adults and children 6 and older who have asthma that is not well controlled on an inhaled corticosteroid alone, or who have COPD requiring maintenance therapy. A Doctronic physician will review your breathing history, current medications, and inhaler technique before prescribing.
Because Symbicort contains a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA), your provider will also review your respiratory history and any cardiac conditions, as LABAs carry a boxed warning and require careful patient selection and monitoring.

Frequently asked questions
Symbicort is approved for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 6 years and older whose asthma is not adequately controlled on an inhaled corticosteroid alone. It is also approved for the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction and to reduce exacerbations in adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Symbicort contains two active ingredients. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways over time. Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes the smooth muscle around the airways, keeping them open for up to 12 hours. Together they address both the inflammatory and bronchospastic components of asthma and COPD.
No. Symbicort is a maintenance medication and should not be used to treat sudden, acute asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Patients should always have a separate short-acting rescue inhaler, such as albuterol, available for sudden symptoms.
Common side effects include oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth), throat irritation, headache, upper respiratory tract infections, and a slightly hoarse voice. Rinsing your mouth with water after each use can help prevent oral thrush. Serious but less common effects include increased blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat, and worsening breathing. Contact your provider if you notice any serious symptoms.
Shake the inhaler well before each use, exhale fully away from the inhaler, then inhale deeply while pressing down on the canister. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds afterward. Always rinse your mouth with water after use to reduce the risk of oral thrush. Your Doctronic provider can review inhaler technique during your visit.
Yes. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole can increase budesonide exposure significantly. Other beta-blockers may reduce the effect of formoterol and can trigger severe bronchospasm in asthma patients. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants can potentiate the cardiovascular effects of formoterol. Always tell your provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.
Doctronic uses an AI-guided evaluation to gather your symptoms, medical history, and medication details. A licensed physician then reviews your information, makes a clinical decision, and, if appropriate, creates a personalized treatment plan that may include a prescription sent to your preferred pharmacy.
