What Is Farxiga?

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is a prescription medication used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, causing excess glucose to be excreted in the urine rather than reabsorbed into the bloodstream. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, Farxiga can help improve glycemic control and support cardiovascular and kidney health in appropriate patients.

Is Online Farxiga Treatment Right for You?

Farxiga is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled with diet and exercise alone, or who need an additional agent alongside existing medications. It is also approved to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.

A physician will review your kidney function, cardiovascular history, and any prior diabetes treatments before prescribing Farxiga. Certain conditions affecting the kidneys or a history of recurrent urinary tract infections may influence whether Farxiga is appropriate for you.

Frequently asked questions

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is FDA-approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is also approved to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in adults at risk of progression.

Farxiga works by inhibiting the SGLT2 transporter in the kidneys. Normally, the kidneys reabsorb glucose back into the bloodstream. Farxiga blocks this process, so excess glucose is removed from the body through the urine, lowering blood sugar levels.

The typical starting dose of Farxiga for type 2 diabetes is 5 mg once daily, taken in the morning with or without food. Your physician may increase the dose to 10 mg once daily if additional blood sugar control is needed and you tolerate the lower dose well.

Common side effects include genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and back pain. More serious but less common risks include diabetic ketoacidosis, Fournier's gangrene, and low blood pressure. Tell your doctor about all current medications and health conditions before starting Farxiga.

Farxiga is actually approved to slow progression of chronic kidney disease in certain patients, but its glucose-lowering effect may be reduced when kidney function is significantly impaired. Your physician will review your kidney function tests (eGFR) to determine whether Farxiga is appropriate and safe for you.

Farxiga alone has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia because it does not stimulate insulin secretion. However, the risk of low blood sugar increases if Farxiga is combined with insulin or other diabetes medications that do lower blood sugar. Follow your physician's monitoring recommendations closely.

Doctronic uses an AI-guided evaluation to collect your health history and symptoms. A licensed physician then reviews your information, determines whether a treatment is appropriate, and creates a personalized treatment plan. The entire process happens online, so you can get care without an in-person visit.
