Get Macular Degeneration Treatment Online
Macular degeneration affects your central vision and can make everyday tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces increasingly difficult. Doctronic connects you with licensed physicians who can evaluate your condition and help coordinate a personalized management plan.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease marked by deterioration of the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It can cause blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty seeing fine details, and, in advanced cases, significant vision loss. With the right treatment and support, many people are able to slow progression and maintain meaningful quality of life.

Frequently asked questions
Dry AMD is the more common form and involves gradual thinning and breakdown of the macula. Wet AMD is less common but more severe, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina that can leak fluid and cause rapid central vision loss. Wet AMD typically requires more urgent treatment, such as anti-VEGF injections administered by an ophthalmologist.
There is currently no cure for macular degeneration. However, for dry AMD, certain nutritional supplements have been shown in clinical trials to slow progression in intermediate to advanced disease. For wet AMD, anti-VEGF injections can significantly slow vision loss and in some cases improve vision. Early detection and regular monitoring are key.
Early signs include mild blurring of central vision, difficulty seeing fine print, straight lines appearing wavy or distorted (metamorphopsia), and a gradual need for brighter light when reading. A dark or empty spot in the center of vision may appear in more advanced stages. Many people have no symptoms in the early stages, making regular eye exams important.
The AREDS2 clinical trial found that a specific combination of vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, and copper slowed progression in people with intermediate or advanced dry AMD in one eye. Your physician can help determine whether supplements are appropriate for your stage of disease.
Yes. Quitting smoking is the single most important modifiable risk factor, as smoking significantly increases AMD risk and progression. Eating a diet rich in leafy green vegetables and fish, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure, and wearing UV-protective sunglasses may also be beneficial.
