What Cough Medicine is Safe During Pregnancy?
Medically reviewed by Faith Coleman, University of New Mexico School of Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
Dextromethorphan is generally considered the safest cough suppressant during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists classifies it as Category C, meaning studies show no increased risk of birth defects when used appropriately. Guaifenesin, an expectorant that helps thin mucus, is also typically safe after the first trimester. Avoid combination medications containing alcohol, pseudoephedrine, or phenylephrine, as these can affect blood flow to the baby. Natural remedies like honey, warm salt water gargles, and increased fluid intake are excellent first-line treatments. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy, as individual circumstances vary. This includes over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements.
