What Can You Take for a Headache While Pregnant?
Medically reviewed by Faith Coleman, University of New Mexico School of Medicine on August 23rd, 2026.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the safest pain reliever during pregnancy, considered safe in all trimesters when used exactly as directed. The recommended maximum dose is 4,000mg per 24-hour period. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as they can cause pregnancy and fetal complications, especially in the third trimester. Non-medication approaches include applying cold or warm compresses to the head or neck, staying hydrated, getting adequate rest, and practicing relaxation techniques. Magnesium supplements (200-400mg daily) may help prevent headaches, but get your doctor's approval and recommendations before use. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy. If you experience severe, persistent, or sudden-onset headaches during pregnancy get medical attention.
