SSRIs sertraline (Zoloft) and citalopram (Celexa) are generally considered the safest antidepressants during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends these medications when the benefits outweigh potential risks. Fluoxetine (Prozac) is also frequently used, though it may cause temporary withdrawal symptoms in newborns. Paroxetine (Paxil) should be avoided due to increased risk of heart defects when taken in the first trimester. Tricyclic antidepressants like nortriptyline are alternatives for women who don't respond to SSRIs. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing antidepressant medications during pregnancy, as untreated depression poses significant risks to both mother and baby.
