Is It Safe to Take Tums While Pregnant?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Tums is generally considered safe during pregnancy when used appropriately. The active ingredient, calcium carbonate, provides additional calcium that many pregnant women need. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that pregnant women require 1,000-1,300mg of calcium daily. However, excessive antacid use can interfere with iron absorption and cause constipation. Taking more than 6 tablets daily or using Tums for extended periods without medical supervision isn't recommended. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new medication during pregnancy, even over-the-counter options.
