Is It Safe to Take Colace While Pregnant?

Docusate sodium (Colace) is commonly used during pregnancy. Limited studies have not found an increased risk of birth defects, but they cannot rule out all pregnancy risks. This stool softener helps water mix with the stool, which can make it softer and easier to pass. Constipation is common during pregnancy. Increasing fiber and fluids is usually tried first; if those steps are not enough, a healthcare professional may recommend a laxative or stool softener such as docusate. Limited studies have not found an increased risk of birth defects with docusate, but they cannot rule out all pregnancy risks. However, you should always consult your healthcare provider before starting any medication during pregnancy, as individual circumstances may vary.
