Does Tirzepatide Affect Your Menstrual Cycle?

Andre Stone | MD

Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.

Tirzepatide is not known to directly alter the menstrual cycle, but weight loss and related metabolic changes may affect periods in some people. Weight loss and changes in metabolic health can affect reproductive hormones and may change the timing or flow of periods. The effects vary, and there is no single amount of weight loss at which menstrual changes should be expected. Some people with PCOS may have more regular periods as their metabolic health improves, but responses vary. It is not clear how long menstrual changes associated with tirzepatide or weight loss may last. Contact your healthcare provider for persistent or heavy bleeding, severe pain, missed periods, or possible pregnancy. Tirzepatide can reduce the effectiveness of birth-control pills after treatment begins and after each dose increase, so ask about temporary backup or non-oral contraception.
