Can You Take Excedrin While Pregnant?

Linda Girgis | MD

Excedrin is not recommended during pregnancy due to its aspirin content. The medication contains aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine - a combination that poses risks to developing babies. Aspirin can cause bleeding complications and may lead to premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in the fetus, particularly during the third trimester. The FDA classifies aspirin as Category D during pregnancy, meaning there's evidence of risk to the fetus. Additionally, high caffeine intake during pregnancy has been linked to low birth weight and miscarriage risk. If you need pain relief during pregnancy, acetaminophen alone is generally considered the safest option when used appropriately.
