What Is Maxalt?

Maxalt (rizatriptan benzoate) is a prescription medication used to manage migraine headaches, with or without aura, in adults. It works by binding to serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, causing cranial blood vessel constriction and blocking the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides that drive migraine pain. With the right dose and ongoing monitoring, most patients experience meaningful pain relief within two hours of taking Maxalt.

Is Online Maxalt Treatment Right for You?

Maxalt is approved for adults who experience migraine headaches, with or without aura, and who have not found adequate relief from over-the-counter pain relievers alone. A Doctronic physician will review your migraine history, current attack frequency, and overall health to determine whether Maxalt is appropriate for you.

Because triptans like Maxalt act on the cardiovascular system, patients with a history of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, stroke, or hemiplegic or basilar migraine are generally not candidates. Your physician will review your cardiac and neurological history to ensure Maxalt can be prescribed safely.

Frequently asked questions

Most clinical studies show that Maxalt begins to reduce migraine pain within 30 minutes, with the majority of patients reporting meaningful relief within two hours. Taking it as early as possible after migraine onset tends to produce the best results.

Maxalt comes in two forms: a standard film-coated tablet swallowed with water, and Maxalt-MLT, an orally disintegrating tablet that dissolves on the tongue without water. Maxalt-MLT can be convenient when nausea makes swallowing difficult during a migraine attack.

If the first dose provides no response at all, a second dose is generally not recommended for that attack. If pain returns after initial relief, a second dose may be taken at least two hours after the first. The maximum dose in a 24-hour period is 30 mg.

Maxalt should not be combined with other triptans or with ergotamine-containing medications such as Cafergot within 24 hours, due to the risk of additive vasospasm. It should also be used cautiously with medications that affect serotonin levels. Your Doctronic physician will review all current medications before prescribing.

Maxalt is not appropriate for patients with ischemic heart disease, coronary artery vasospasm, a history of stroke or TIA, uncontrolled hypertension, hemiplegic migraine, or basilar migraine. It is also contraindicated within 24 hours of other triptans or ergot-type medications.

No. Maxalt is an acute treatment taken at the onset of a migraine attack. It is not intended for migraine prevention. If you experience frequent migraines, your Doctronic physician may discuss separate preventive therapy options appropriate for your situation.

Doctronic uses an AI-powered evaluation to gather detailed information about your symptoms and medical history. A licensed physician then reviews your case and, if appropriate, creates a personalized treatment plan that may include a prescription sent to your pharmacy.
