What Does It Mean When Your Hands Shake?

Hand shaking, or tremor, typically indicates involuntary muscle contractions that can stem from various causes. Essential tremor affects about 10 million Americans and is the most common movement disorder, often running in families. Parkinson's disease causes a characteristic resting tremor that occurs when hands are still. Other causes include caffeine intake, stress, fatigue, certain medications, hyperthyroidism, or low blood sugar. Occasional trembling during stress or after caffeine can be harmless, but persistent or worsening shaking warrants medical evaluation. Seek urgent care for shaking that starts suddenly or occurs with weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, or other severe symptoms. The timing, frequency, and triggers of your tremor help determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment approach.
