Nausea lasting hours after eating has many possible causes, including gastroparesis, food intolerances, acid reflux, gallbladder problems, ulcers, infections, pregnancy, and medication side effects. Gastroparesis delays stomach emptying and can cause nausea, vomiting, early fullness, and bloating after meals. Its prevalence varies depending on how it is defined and measured. Lactose malabsorption is common worldwide, but not everyone with it develops symptoms. When symptoms occur, they more often include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, or diarrhea, although nausea can occur. GERD occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. It usually causes heartburn or regurgitation, although some people may also experience nausea after meals. Other common causes include gallbladder disease, peptic ulcers, and certain medications like antibiotics or pain relievers. Eating quickly, high-fat meals, or stress may contribute, but nausea that persists, keeps returning, or interferes with eating should be discussed with a clinician. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down, vomit containing blood or resembling coffee grounds, black or bloody stools, chest pain, fainting, confusion, signs of dehydration, or a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas.
