What Causes a Pulsating Feeling in Your Abdomen?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 20th, 2026.
A pulsating feeling in your abdomen typically results from your abdominal aorta, the main artery supplying blood to your lower body. This large vessel runs directly behind your stomach area, and its normal pulse can become noticeable when you're lying down, after eating, or when experiencing anxiety. The sensation is usually harmless and affects up to 30% of healthy adults at some point. However, persistent or painful pulsations may indicate conditions like an abdominal aortic aneurysm, gastritis, or muscle spasms. The feeling can also intensify during pregnancy, after consuming caffeine, or when your heart rate increases from exercise or stress.
