Alcohol irritates your stomach lining and increases acid production, causing pain and inflammation. When you drink, alcohol directly contacts the gastric mucosa, triggering inflammatory responses that can lead to gastritis. Additionally, alcohol stimulates gastric acid secretion by up to 50% above normal levels, which can erode protective stomach tissue. The pain often occurs because alcohol disrupts the balance between stomach acid and protective mucus. Dehydration from alcohol consumption can also concentrate stomach acids, intensifying discomfort. The severity typically depends on the amount consumed, alcohol concentration, and whether you ate food beforehand.
