Why Do I Keep Getting Utis After Sex?

Post-coital UTIs occur because sexual activity can push bacteria from the anal area and external genitals into the urethra. Women are particularly susceptible due to their shorter urethra (about 1.5 inches) compared to men's 8-inch urethra. During intercourse, friction and movement create opportunities for E. coli and other bacteria to travel upward into the bladder. Hormonal changes can also reduce natural protective barriers. Some people choose to urinate after sex, although evidence that this prevents UTIs is limited. Staying well hydrated may help, especially if you usually drink little fluid. Gently wash the external genital area as usual, but avoid douching or harsh cleansers. If UTIs repeatedly occur after sex, a healthcare provider can confirm the diagnosis and discuss options such as a prescribed single antibiotic dose after sex. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, vomiting, back or side pain, pregnancy, or worsening symptoms.
