Taking Pepto-Bismol with antibiotics is generally safe, but timing matters for optimal effectiveness. Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate, which can reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics like tetracycline and fluoroquinolones by up to 50% when taken simultaneously. Most healthcare providers recommend spacing these medications at least 2-3 hours apart to prevent interaction. The bismuth in Pepto-Bismol may also temporarily turn your stool black, which is harmless but can be alarming if unexpected. Some antibiotics like amoxicillin have minimal interaction with bismuth subsalicylate. Always consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider about proper timing, especially if you're taking multiple medications or have underlying digestive conditions.
