Why Do I Get Stomach Cramps After Drinking Water?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Stomach cramps after drinking water can result from several factors including drinking too quickly, consuming very cold water, or having an underlying digestive condition. When you drink water rapidly, it can cause your stomach to expand suddenly, triggering cramping sensations. Cold water may shock your digestive system and cause temporary spasms. Additionally, drinking large amounts on an empty stomach can stimulate gastric contractions. Medical conditions like gastritis, IBS, or food sensitivities can also make your stomach more reactive to water intake. If cramps persist or occur with other symptoms like nausea or bloating, consider drinking water at room temperature in smaller sips and consult a healthcare provider if the problem continues.
