Why Do I Feel Like Throwing up but Nothing Comes Out?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
Dry heaving occurs when your body goes through the vomiting motions without producing stomach contents. This happens because your stomach is already empty or your body is responding to nausea triggers without having enough material to expel. Common causes include food poisoning, motion sickness, pregnancy morning sickness, acid reflux, or anxiety. Your diaphragm and abdominal muscles still contract forcefully, creating the retching sensation. Dehydration can worsen dry heaving, as your body produces less saliva and stomach fluids. If dry heaving persists for more than 24 hours, occurs with severe abdominal pain, or includes blood, seek medical attention immediately.
