Why Do I Feel Like Something is Stuck in My Throat?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
The sensation of something stuck in your throat, called globus sensation, affects up to 4% of people and has several common causes. Acid reflux is the most frequent culprit, causing stomach acid to irritate throat tissues and create swelling. Muscle tension from stress or anxiety can also trigger this feeling by tightening throat muscles. Other causes include postnasal drip, allergies, or throat inflammation from infections. In rare cases, actual obstructions like enlarged thyroid glands or esophageal disorders may be responsible. Most cases resolve on their own within days to weeks, but persistent symptoms lasting over two weeks warrant medical evaluation to rule out underlying conditions.
