Why Do I Feel Like I Can''t Take a Deep Breath?

Feeling unable to take a deep breath typically stems from anxiety, respiratory conditions, or physical restrictions around your chest. Anxiety is one possible cause of shortness of breath, but physical causes should also be considered. Common causes include asthma, panic attacks, chest muscle tension, poor posture, or upper respiratory infections. Heart conditions, anemia, or being out of shape can also create this sensation. The feeling often worsens when you focus on your breathing, creating a cycle of anxiety. Seek medical advice if this sensation is new, persistent, recurrent, or worsening. Get emergency help for severe or sudden trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue or gray lips or skin.
