What Does It Mean When You Have Watery Diarrhea?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Watery diarrhea indicates your intestines are producing loose, liquid stools with high water content. This occurs when your digestive system cannot properly absorb water, often due to infections, food poisoning, or inflammatory conditions. Infections are a common cause of acute watery diarrhea. Viruses are often responsible, but bacteria such as certain types of E. coli or Salmonella can also cause it. Other triggers include certain medications, lactose intolerance, or chronic conditions like IBS. Many cases improve within a few days. Contact a healthcare professional if diarrhea lasts more than a few days or sooner if you have signs of dehydration, blood or black stools, severe abdominal pain, a high fever, repeated vomiting, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems may need earlier advice.
