What Causes White Patches on Your Skin?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
White patches on skin result from melanin loss or reduced pigment production in affected areas. Vitiligo affects an estimated 0.5-1% of the population and is a common cause of white patches. It occurs when the immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. Other causes include fungal infections like tinea versicolor, post-inflammatory hypopigmentation from eczema or injuries, and autoimmune conditions such as morphea or lichen sclerosus. Chemical exposure, certain medications, and inherited pigment conditions can also cause areas of lighter or white skin. The patches may be small spots or large areas, and their appearance varies depending on the underlying condition and your natural skin tone.
