Does Minocycline Work Better than Doxycycline for Acne?

Both minocycline and doxycycline are highly effective tetracycline antibiotics for acne treatment, with comparable success rates of 75-85%. Clinical studies show minocycline may have a slight edge in reducing inflammatory lesions and has better tissue penetration, but it carries higher risks of serious side effects including autoimmune reactions and permanent skin discoloration. Doxycycline is generally preferred as first-line treatment due to its safer side effect profile and lower cost. The choice between these antibiotics should depend on your specific acne severity, previous treatment responses, and risk tolerance. Both typically require 12-16 weeks to show maximum effectiveness when combined with topical treatments.
