What Causes Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin That Aren''t Itchy?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Tiny red dots on the skin that aren't itchy can have several causes. One possibility is petechiae, which are pinpoint spots caused by bleeding under the skin. These pinpoint spots result from minor bleeding when small blood vessels rupture due to pressure, strain, or platelet issues. Petechiae typically measure 1-3 millimeters and appear red, purple, or brown. Common causes include intense coughing, vomiting, heavy lifting, or certain medications like blood thinners. Cherry angiomas, small benign blood vessel growths, can also create painless red dots. They become increasingly common with age and are estimated to affect about 75% of adults over 75. While usually harmless, sudden widespread petechiae may indicate serious conditions like low platelet count or blood disorders requiring immediate medical evaluation.
