What Causes Sharp Stomach Pain That Comes and Goes?

Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.

Sharp stomach pain that comes and goes typically indicates muscle spasms, trapped gas, or digestive issues. Common causes include gastritis, peptic ulcers, gallbladder disease, kidney stones, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Food poisoning, overeating, or eating too quickly can trigger intermittent cramping. Gas bubbles moving through the intestines often create sharp, stabbing sensations that last seconds to minutes. Gallstones cause severe cramping pain that radiates to the back or shoulder, typically after fatty meals. Appendicitis starts as intermittent pain around the navel before becoming constant in the lower right abdomen. If pain persists over 24 hours, worsens progressively, or accompanies fever, vomiting, or blood in stool, seek immediate medical evaluation.
