What Causes Red Bumps on Your Thighs?

Andre Stone | MD

Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.

Red bumps on your thighs commonly result from folliculitis, keratosis pilaris, or heat rash. Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by infection or irritation, and may produce small red bumps or pustules around hair shafts. Keratosis pilaris affects up to 40% of adults, causing rough, red bumps due to keratin buildup that blocks hair follicles. Heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked during hot weather or exercise. Other causes include razor burn from shaving, contact dermatitis from irritating fabrics or detergents, insect bites, or fungal infections in warm, moist areas. The location, appearance, and accompanying symptoms help determine the specific cause and appropriate treatment approach.
