What Causes Blood in Semen?

Blood in semen is usually caused by inflammation or minor trauma to the reproductive system. In many cases, this condition, called hematospermia, resolves on its own within a few weeks. Common causes include prostate infections, sexually transmitted infections, vigorous sexual activity, or medical procedures like prostate biopsies. Less frequently, it may indicate prostate cancer, blood clotting disorders, or structural abnormalities. While alarming, hematospermia is rarely serious in men under 40. Medical evaluation is recommended if the bleeding persists or recurs, especially in men over 40. Seek care sooner if it occurs with blood in the urine, fever, significant pain, swelling, difficulty urinating, or other concerning symptoms.
