What Causes a Gurgling Sound in Your Upper Stomach?

Linda Girgis | MD

Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.

A gurgling sound in your upper stomach typically results from gas bubbles moving through fluid in your digestive tract. This occurs when air mixes with gastric juices during normal digestion or when you swallow excess air while eating, drinking, or chewing gum. The sound, called borborygmi, happens as your stomach muscles contract to push contents toward the small intestine. Common triggers include carbonated beverages, eating too quickly, lactose intolerance, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While occasional gurgling is normal, persistent sounds accompanied by pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits may indicate underlying digestive issues requiring medical evaluation.
