What Are the Side Effects of Metoprolol?

Metoprolol commonly causes fatigue, dizziness, and slow heart rate in 10-30% of patients. Other frequent side effects include cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, and nausea. Some people experience sleep disturbances, depression, or decreased exercise tolerance. Serious but rare side effects include severe bradycardia (heart rate below 50 bpm), heart block, and bronchospasm in asthmatic patients. Sexual dysfunction and weight gain may occur with long-term use. Most side effects are dose-dependent and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication over 2-4 weeks.
