What Are the Side Effects of Ciprofloxacin?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Ciprofloxacin can cause both common and serious side effects. Common side effects can include nausea and diarrhea. Headache and dizziness may also occur, but how often each side effect occurs varies among studies and patient groups. More concerning reactions include tendon problems (especially Achilles tendon rupture), nerve damage, and central nervous system effects like confusion or seizures. Serious side effects are uncommon, but their likelihood varies depending on the specific reaction and a person's risk factors. The FDA boxed warning covers tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral nerve damage, central nervous system effects, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. Other notable side effects include QT interval prolongation, photosensitivity, and C. difficile-associated diarrhea. Stop taking ciprofloxacin and contact a healthcare professional right away if you develop tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, or new confusion or other concerning mental changes. Seek emergency care for a seizure, severe allergic reaction, or other life-threatening symptoms. If you develop concerning side effects or have risk factors for serious reactions, ask a healthcare professional whether an alternative antibiotic may be appropriate.
