Is It Safe to Take Omeprazole Every Day?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Daily omeprazole is generally safe for most people when used under medical supervision. Omeprazole is approved for several acid-related conditions, including certain forms of GERD, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The appropriate dose and treatment length depend on the condition, age, formulation, and other health factors, so patients should follow the label or their clinician’s instructions. Long-term use has been associated with kidney problems, bone fractures, and vitamin B12 deficiency, although the level of risk varies and some associations do not prove that omeprazole caused the problem. Rarely, prolonged PPI use can cause low blood magnesium, especially in people with other risk factors or who take certain medicines. If omeprazole is needed beyond the initial treatment period, a clinician should periodically review whether it is still needed and whether the dose remains appropriate. Laboratory or other monitoring may be advised based on individual risk factors and symptoms.
