Is It Normal to Have Diarrhea After Surgery?

Diarrhea can occur after surgery, but how often it happens depends on the operation, medications, and other individual factors. Anesthesia medications, antibiotics, and changes in gut bacteria during hospitalization frequently disrupt normal digestive function. Opioid pain medicines usually cause constipation. Loose stool can sometimes occur around retained stool or after constipation treatments, so tell your care team about significant changes in bowel habits. Surgical stress also affects the nervous system that controls bowel movements. Mild diarrhea may improve within several days, but the expected course depends on the operation, medications, and cause. Contact your surgical team if it is frequent, worsening, or not improving. Contact your surgical team promptly if diarrhea is frequent, worsening, not improving, or occurs after antibiotics. Seek urgent medical care for bloody or black stools, severe abdominal pain, fever, fainting or confusion, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down.
