How Do You Know If Your Thyroid Medication Dose is Wrong?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Several key symptoms indicate your thyroid medication dose may be incorrect. If your dose is too low, you might experience fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, and brain fog. If your dose is too high, you may feel anxious, have heart palpitations, experience insomnia, lose weight unexpectedly, or feel overheated. Your TSH levels should typically fall between 0.4-4.0 mIU/L, though optimal ranges vary by individual. Most doctors recommend blood work every 6-8 weeks after dose changes and every 6-12 months once stable. Pay attention to persistent symptoms that don't improve after 6-8 weeks on your current dose, as this timeframe allows your body to fully adjust to medication changes.
