Does Wellbutrin Help with Sexual Side Effects?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Wellbutrin (bupropion) may help some people with sexual side effects caused by certain antidepressants, but the evidence is mixed and it does not work for everyone. Unlike SSRIs which often cause decreased libido and difficulty reaching orgasm, Wellbutrin works on dopamine and norepinephrine pathways that don't typically impair sexual function. Some studies suggest that adding bupropion may improve sexual desire or function for some patients, but results vary and a specific likelihood of benefit is uncertain. A clinician may consider adding bupropion or switching antidepressants when an SSRI causes sexual side effects. Do not add, stop, or switch antidepressants without medical guidance, because bupropion is not appropriate for everyone and medication changes can cause problems. If bupropion helps, the timing of improvement can vary; patients should discuss what to expect and when to reassess treatment with their clinician.
