Does Medicare Cover Zepbound for Sleep Apnea?
It can, if your plan includes it. Zepbound is FDA-approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. CMS lists that as a use Medicare drug plans can cover.
Why sleep apnea is different from weight loss
By law, Medicare drug coverage (Part D) can't pay for drugs used only for weight loss. Sleep apnea is a separate, FDA-approved use, so the weight loss rule doesn't apply to it. That's true for a stand-alone drug plan and for a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage.
The FDA approved Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea on December 20, 2024. It was the first medicine approved for the condition. It's approved for adults with obesity, to use with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
What your plan may require
Each plan decides whether Zepbound is on its drug list and at what tier. Your plan may also need prior authorization (its approval before it pays). For that, it may ask your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and how severe it is.
When your plan covers Zepbound for sleep apnea, your usual Part D costs apply. In 2027, that means a deductible of $700 at most and a $2,400 yearly cap on what you pay out of pocket for covered drugs. Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage for its rules. Why the GLP-1 Bridge doesn't apply
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary program with a $50 monthly copay for certain GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss. It runs through December 31, 2027, and for Zepbound it includes only the KwikPen.
People with moderate to severe sleep apnea can't use the Bridge. Medicare.gov says their Part D plan might cover a GLP-1 for the condition instead. Our guides to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge and Zepbound coverage explain the weight loss side.
Getting evaluated
Zepbound for sleep apnea starts with a diagnosis of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, usually from a sleep study, and a prescription. Your doctor will also check whether Zepbound is a good fit for you.
