Does Low Testosterone Cause Weight Gain in Men?
Medically reviewed by Faith Coleman, University of New Mexico School of Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Yes, low testosterone can contribute to weight gain in men. When testosterone levels decline, muscle mass decreases, energy expenditure decreases, and it's easier to gain and harder to lose fat, even without changing calorie intake. The fat tends to accumulate around the abdomen, which poses additional health risks, including insulin resistance. Insulin resistance promotes fat storage and impairs glucose uptake. It creates a cycle in which low testosterone promotes insulin resistance which further suppresses testosterone.
