Does Creatine Affect Erectile Function?

Andre Stone | MD

Available research has not established that creatine supplementation causes erectile dysfunction. However, erectile function has not been a primary outcome in most creatine studies, so the evidence is limited. Creatine primarily works by increasing phosphocreatine stores in muscles, and there is no established evidence that it disrupts the blood-flow or hormonal processes involved in erections. Creatine can improve performance during certain types of high-intensity exercise, but there is no established evidence that this improves erectile function. The most commonly reported side effects remain water retention and minor digestive issues. If you develop erectile dysfunction while taking creatine, do not assume creatine is the cause—or rule it out on your own. Discuss the symptom, your supplements, and your medications with a healthcare professional, especially if it persists or occurs with other symptoms.
