Can You Use Salicylic Acid While Pregnant?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Topical salicylic acid is generally considered safe during pregnancy when used in low concentrations (0.5-2%). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists classifies topical salicylic acid as acceptable for pregnant women, as minimal amounts are absorbed through the skin. However, high-dose oral salicylates should be avoided due to potential risks including bleeding complications and premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Most over-the-counter acne treatments and skincare products contain safe levels for pregnancy use. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new skincare regimen during pregnancy, especially if you're using multiple products containing active ingredients.
