Can You Take Ibuprofen on an Empty Stomach?

Linda Girgis | MD

Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 21st, 2026.

Taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach is not recommended and can cause stomach irritation or ulcers. Ibuprofen belongs to a class of medications called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that can damage the stomach lining when taken without food. Studies show that taking ibuprofen with food reduces the risk of gastrointestinal side effects by up to 40%. The medication should be taken with a meal, snack, or at least a glass of milk to provide a protective buffer for your stomach. If you must take ibuprofen on an empty stomach, consider taking it with an antacid or limiting use to occasional doses rather than regular daily use.
