Taking Ambien and melatonin together is not recommended without specific instructions from a physician to do so. Both substances affect sleep cycles and can cause excessive sedation when combined. Ambien (zolpidem) is a prescription sedative-hypnotic that works on GABA receptors, while melatonin regulates circadian rhythms. Studies show combining them can increase drowsiness, confusion, and risk of falling by up to 40%. The interaction may also cause next-day grogginess and impaired cognitive function, poor judgment and impaired motor coordination. If you're considering this combination, consult your doctor first. They can assess your specific situation, review other medications, and determine if the benefits outweigh potential risks. It would be better to diagnose and manage whatever is causing sleep difficulty than to just treat the symptom, that is, the poor sleep.
