Yes, you can have herpes and never experience a visible outbreak. Many people with HSV-1 or HSV-2 do not know they have it, often because they have no symptoms, have mild symptoms, or mistake them for another condition. The virus can remain dormant in nerve cells for years or even decades without causing blisters, sores, or other obvious signs. Even without symptoms, infected individuals can still transmit the virus to partners through viral shedding, which occurs intermittently. Some people discover their herpes status after symptoms appear, after a partner is diagnosed, or through a blood test ordered after discussion with a healthcare professional.
