Alcohol may not be safe for everyone taking metformin. Ask your clinician whether you should drink, especially if you have kidney or liver problems, are dehydrated, or are acutely ill. Metformin-associated lactic acidosis is a rare but serious condition that occurs when lactic acid builds up in your bloodstream faster than your body can remove it. The FDA does not specify a weekly drink limit for people taking metformin, but metformin labeling advises against excessive alcohol use. Ask your clinician what, if any, amount is safe for you. Alcohol and metformin both affect how your liver processes lactate, creating a potentially dangerous combination. Binge drinking or consuming alcohol on an empty stomach significantly raises your risk. If you experience symptoms like muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or unusual fatigue after drinking, seek immediate medical attention as these may indicate lactic acidosis.
